My goal as a mental health counselor is to help others have hope, understanding, practical solutions, and useful tools to achieve their optimal mental health. Many times people suffer because they lack the knowledge and skills needed to move forward in life. I offer people a foundation of insight and understanding on which they can apply practical tools for change.
Many of the things I teach clients I have had to learn and use in my own life. I bring to the counseling relationship my personal experiences in mental health as well as my professional training.
The journey to become a mental health counselor began with the adoption of our son. Our son was a toddler when we adopted him. My husband and I were not expecting our son to have significant emotional and behavioral problems. However, it soon became apparent that we were unequipped to help our child. We saw multiple mental health professionals before we were able to identify some of the issues we were facing.
Trauma can stem from various causes and sources. While it should be emphasized that there is no right or wrong way to feel after a traumatic event, there are strategies that can help. It is important to recognize and acknowledge feelings of pain, fear, and grief to regain your emotional balance.

Anxiety is the body and mind’s natural reaction to unfamiliar, stressful, or dangerous situations. Before a significant event, a healthy level of uneasiness or dread can help you remain aware and alert. An excess of apprehension can feel irrational, overwhelming, and debilitating.

Humans experience stress as a natural reaction to meet a demand or challenge. This “fight or flight” survival mechanism slows normal bodily functions like immunity and digestion to focus on breath, alertness, blood circulation, and muscle movement. The degree to which we react can be motivating or detrimental.
